One of my favorite parts of nursing school is the ability to go to "skills lab". The skills lab at my school is open on Tuesdays and Fridays and it allows students to come in and practice the skills we have learned up to that point. It is so helpful!
Sometimes we don't always get the opportunity to master a skill the day we learn it, but the skills lab provides us with the opportunity to do so. The room is filled with hospital beds, supplies, mannequins, and supplies. We are able to gather all the supplies we need and practice a skill over and over until it is mastered.
It's also really beneficial because there are sixth semester students and professors in the lab so we can ask them questions and have them guide us in the right direction. For example, I was running into problems when practicing suctioning on a patient, and my mentor was able to step in and show me the correct way. I am so thankful for the mentors because without them, we may practice a skill in the wrong way without even noticing. By working with the mentors, I know I am preforming the skill in the correct manner. Without them, I believe many of us would not do as well as are. Once I master a skill I move to the next one. In this way, I know I will be confident when asked to perform a skill in the hospital.
The lab was also very helpful these past two weeks. My group had our clinical midterms this last Thursday where we were tested on a variety of skills. I passed my exam with a perfect score and I owe that to the time I spent practicing in the lab.
Overall, I am just grateful that the school of nursing allows us these lab hours in order to prepare us to be the best nurses we can be. I am going to continue to take advantage of this resource as long as I am in the program!
